With a one-in-a-million diagnosis rate and limited resources for families, CareOne shines a light on the unique role of assisted living facilities in CJD care and caregiver support

NOVEMBER 05, 2024FORT LEE, NJ – CareOne, a leading, family-owned senior care provider with more than 60 locations in the U.S., partnered with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center to host a Continuing Medical Education (CME) event on Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) and other prion diseases. This event was aimed at building CJD awareness and educating medical professionals about this devastating condition that often goes unrecognized. Having recently cared for two patients with CJD, CareOne has identified a critical need for robust patient and caregiver support. Assisted living and memory care facilities are uniquely equipped to address these challenges effectively.

Though rare, it most commonly affects people between the ages of 55 and 75, with symptoms developing between the ages of 60 and 65. Because symptoms present similarly to dementia and Alzheimer’s, many of those with CJD often have a delayed diagnosis. An aggressive disease, 70% of those diagnosed will not survive a year. In New Jersey, there are upwards of 18 new cases diagnosed every year.

“Families of these patients require support both in CJD awareness and in caring for their loved ones. This disease progresses so rapidly and the CJD Foundation is a lifeline to these caregivers,” said CareOne Certified Dementia Specialist, Mary Beth Rose, who cared for the two CJD patients at CareOne. “Without access to specialized communities, families often feel completely alone. We learned that settings like assisted living or memory care facilities offer a lifeline – not only for the patients themselves but also for their caregivers who may feel overwhelmed by the progression of this disease.”

As scientific research on this rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease continues to advance, Mary Beth emphasizes the importance of providing holistic support to patients and their caregivers.

“For those impacted by CJD, finding a community of understanding and compassionate environments can make all the difference in navigating such a difficult journey,” she added.

This event, held in the Cooperman Barnabus Medical Center Auditorium on October 29th, was attended by many New Jersey professionals across the healthcare industry. These professionals included physicians, nurses, case managers, psychiatrists, neurologists, social workers, infectious disease experts, memory care and skilled nursing facilities, and more. Dr. Brian Appleby, a neuropsychiatrist at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Medical Director of the CJD Foundation, attended the event as its speaker. Attendees walked away with CJD awareness, a comprehensive understanding of other prion diseases, including the underlying pathophysiology, key clinical features, and the ability to differentiate between the various types of prion diseases.

CareOne Completes 2nd Annual Summer of Sharing https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-completes-second-annual-summer-of-sharing-initiative/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 14:37:05 +0000 https://www.care-one.com/?p=11544 Summer of Sharing Logo

The large integrated healthcare network successfully concluded its second annual charitable giving program across multiple states

SEPTEMBER 10, 2024FORT LEE, NJ – CareOne, a leading, family-owned senior care provider with more than 60 locations in the U.S, ended its second annual Summer of Sharing charitable giving program, raising funds for local charities.

CareOne created Summer of Sharing in 2023 in an effort to affect change on a local level and mobilize its facilities across multiple states to give back to the communities it serves. Last year, the healthcare network raised $60,000.

Earlier this summer, each building selected a local cause or charity for which to raise money. Over the past three months, buildings have organized fundraisers and engaged with their community networks to support their causes.

“Summer of Sharing is our yearly opportunity to invest back into the communities that have always embraced us,” said CareOne Chairman and CEO, Daniel E. Straus. “I am proud to see our teams mobilize and extend our commitment to care beyond their four walls and make a difference in the lives of those who may need a little extra support.”

CareOne selected more than 30 local organizations that support a variety of causes, from food banks, family services, housing and beyond. Fundraising efforts included facility events such as family fun days, “paint and sip” parties as well as car washes. To close out the initiative, many CareOne locations hosted celebrations honoring their beneficiaries to present them with the funds raised.

“Giving back to the community is a core pillar of the CareOne Difference,” said Anne Marie Gauntlet, SVP of Operations for CareOne. “We are thankful to our employees, residents and patients who dedicated their summer to their causes. It was heartwarming to see the CareOne community work together to further support the communities they serve.”

CareOne Dementia Care Specialist Receives McKnight’s Pinnacle Award https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-employee-receives-mcknights-pinnacle-award/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 17:48:53 +0000 https://www.care-one.com/?p=10121 Pinnacle Awards 2024 Honoree Graphic

CareOne is delighted to share that Senior Dementia Care Specialist, Joan DiPaola, has been selected by the 2024 McKnight's Pinnacle Awards as their Thought Leader award recipient.

McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards honors industry veterans who have set standards, driven change, and provided guidance and inspiration to peers. This program recognizes individuals across the senior care, skilled nursing, or home care sector at large.

With more than 20 years of experience in the fields of nursing and dementia care, Joan has earned a reputation as a champion of person-centered care. Since joining CareOne, she has taught frontline staff, physicians, and communities how to improve communication with those with dementia to foster connection, break down social barriers, and remove stigmas. She developed CareOne’s Food for Thought program, an educational initiative that teaches the language and the approaches to effectively communicate with those with dementia without pharmaceutical interventions.

Additionally, Joan organizes monthly virtual networking sessions for caregivers who have loved ones with dementia, enabling families to directly confide in Joan about their challenges while also connecting with other caregivers in similar situations. As a result of these networking sessions, many caregivers have formed long-lasting and therapeutic bonds with others navigating the same challenges.

Another initiative Joan developed is a monthly Spousal Elegant Dining program, enabling spouses and their partners with dementia to dine in a restaurant with other couples experiencing the same challenges. This includes working with dining staff in local restaurants and educating them on dementia – including best practices for communication as well as nuanced considerations like choosing the right table settings to facilitate the most comfortable and inclusive dining experience.

As an extension of this effort to give loved ones with dementia more freedom of choice and personal autonomy, Joan also introduced summer music concerts and other activities, empowering residents to choose how they spend their time.

Joan has also been integral to refining CareOne’s approach to care. She introduced monthly educational training sessions and continues to counsel staff on how to develop personalized care plans for every single patient at CareOne, including comprehensive hand-off notes, insights into patients’ life stories, and other important personal considerations.

We are grateful to Joan for continuing to raise the bar for dementia care. Congratulations, Joan, for receiving this exceptional recognition from McKnight's Pinnacle Awards!

CareOne Coordinates Multiple Flights to Israel to Provide Lifesaving Supplies to Those in Need https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-donates-millions-of-supplies-to-israel-in-multiple-flights/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 16:00:41 +0000 https://www.care-one.com/?p=9582 CareOne donations, aiding Israel

Daniel Straus, CEO of the integrated healthcare network, plans to continue arranging ongoing flights in support of CareOne’s ongoing humanitarian efforts

October 19, 2023FORT LEE, NEW JERSEY – CareOne, a leading, family-owned senior care provider with more than 60 locations in the Northeast, sprang into immediate action following the atrocities that took place in Israel in early October. Led by CEO and philanthropist, Daniel Straus, CareOne donates millions of supplies to Israel with the help of its partners and the community. Together, they have been able to provide lifesaving medical supplies among other necessities to those on the ground affected by this crisis.

What started with the donation of one camelback on Tuesday, October 10, has turned into more than $1 million worth of supplies collected and counting. Three flights, arranged by the Straus family, successfully transported 200 reservist soldiers, physicians, and families of victims last week. Additionally, more than two million items were collected, including lifesaving medical supplies, batteries, headlamps, phone chargers, clothes, baby formula, camelbacks, sleeping bags, hygiene products, and more.

“At CareOne, the duty of caregiving extends beyond the walls of our facilities. It is ingrained in everything we do,” said Straus. “I am profoundly grateful that with the help of hundreds of volunteers, our neighbors, and business partners in the local community, we have successfully completed the first four flights to Israel, delivering lifesaving supplies and medications to those on the ground. We remain committed to aiding innocent civilians in Israel in perpetuity.”

While the tumultuous situation in Israel continues, there is no end in sight for CareOne’s humanitarian efforts.

“We are forever indebted to those who have come together to support our efforts thus far, and our work continues,” continued Straus. “It is crucial that we continue to collect supplies to help those in crisis. Any donation is appreciated, as every bit helps.”

CareOne thanks its staff, partners, and communities who have answered their call for help to ensure this cause is supported. Donations can be dropped off at CareOne at Teaneck – 544 Teaneck Road, Teaneck NJ 17666, and monetary donations can also be made to the UJA Federation New York.

CareOne Raises $60,000 in Seasonal, Company-Wide Philanthropic Initiative https://www.care-one.com/blog/press-release-careone-raises-60000-philanthropic-initiative/ Wed, 13 Sep 2023 16:00:41 +0000 https://www.care-one.com/?p=9514 Summer of Sharing

The large integrated healthcare network successfully executed a first-of-its-kind charitable initiative across multiple states

SEPTEMBER 13, 2023FORT LEE, NJ – CareOne, a leading, family-owned senior care provider with more than 60 locations in the U.S., successfully concluded its Summer of Sharing charitable giving program, raising $60,000.

Earlier this summer, each building selected a local cause or charity to raise donations for, enabling CareOne to give back to the communities it serves and drive meaningful change.

“Our commitment to compassionate care and our communities is at the heart of everything we do,” said CareOne Chairman and CEO, Daniel E. Straus. “Summer of Sharing has allowed us to extend this commitment to charitable endeavors and directly give back to our communities that have always welcomed us with open arms.”

The 45+ selected charitable organizations support a diverse range of causes, from food banks and children’s hospitals to veterans’ associations and more. Some buildings opted to support specific community needs, such as providing back-to-school supplies or creating a reading garden at a local school.

To boost community engagement, CareOne creatively orchestrated a variety of fundraising initiatives to support their selected causes. Noteworthy examples include the CareOne at Evesham Assisted Living’s back-to-school supply drive, CareOne at Redstone’s Glow Ball golf fundraiser, a car show at CareOne at The Cupola, and CareOne at Newton’s Community Fun Day, among others. The events not only raised funds and collected supplies, but they also garnered attendance from local officials, deepening their connections with their local communities.

To close Summer of Sharing, each CareOne location participated in a company-wide end-of-summer bash where representatives from each selected charity visited the facility for a celebration and presented checks and donations.

“The CareOne difference goes beyond providing healthcare,” said Vice President of Operations, Lisa Rhoads. “This initiative was a success because of our employees. Their dedication, shared purpose and commitment to give back to the communities in which we operate has made a tremendous impact. We cannot thank them enough for their stewardship of this meaningful initiative.”

A complete list of the chosen beneficiaries can be found here.
