They are both smiling and her hands are on this shoulders in a comforting manner.

The quality of care we deliver to our patients wouldn’t be possible without our nurses. They not only put our patients first every single day, but they also live and breathe the CareOne Difference, and make our facilities some of the best places to work.

So, what exactly makes our nurses so exceptional? They, of course, have the nursing skills from advanced degrees, certifications and experience required to provide the right care and treatment to our patients’ diverse needs — but they also have so much more than that. Their soft skills are what make CareOne a unique place to work and our nurses so excellent in the care, laughter and friendship they provide our patients and each other. Put simply, the nurses who work in our 60+ facilities are superheroes. Here are seven qualities CareOne nurses universally embody:

  1. Compassion. Most healthcare workers pursue their professions in the medical field because they have a strong desire to help and ease the pain and suffering of others. CareOne’s nurses are no exception. They prioritize delivering compassionate care that builds trust and lasting, meaningful relationships with patients and their families.
  2. Respect. Respect is an essential quality to embody as a senior care nurse, as it upholds the dignity and autonomy of patients, regardless of their medical conditions or limitations. When nurses treat residents and each other with respect, it fosters self-worth among our patients and promotes a more positive work environment, ultimately leading to better care outcomes. At CareOne, our nurses protect patient dignity and treat everyone with equal respect.
  3. Dedication. The commitment to continuity of care is a cornerstone to building trust and improving patient’s well-being and health outcomes. Our dedicated nurses at CareOne are patient-first and intrinsically motivated to do their best. They are devoted to their own professional growth so they can continue to deliver the highest quality of care.
  4. Resilience. Resilient nurses manage challenging transitions and difficult conversations while having the courage to continue. Healthcare workers, particularly those in skilled nursing facilities, have experienced a lot of hardship in the last couple of years, but we are so proud of how our nurses and staff have persevered through the toughest of challenges and never let their commitment or quality of care waver.
  5. Adaptability. Being adaptable in a healthcare environment means being swift and able to pivot quickly to anything that may arise, like a patient’s rapidly changing condition or an influx of new patient admissions. No matter the situation, CareOne’s nurses are flexible, critical thinkers and maintain a patient-first mentality.
  6. Intentionality. Approaching care with purpose and intent is critical to maintaining positive outcomes. Our nurses make deliberate decisions about patients’ care to meet individual needs. And they appreciate that they are entrusted with someone’s health and well-being, so they leave no stone unturned.
  7. Collaborative. Healthcare teams that deliver the best care outcomes are ones that are collaborative, working fluidly with patients, their families and the broader care team for each patient. CareOne’s various care teams work synergistically with patients and caregivers to put together the most holistic and comprehensive care plans for each patient, no matter how complex their needs may be. This collaborative approach allows patients, and their families, to be active participants in their care decisions.

At CareOne, we deliver the highest quality of care thanks to our outstanding, compassionate senior care nurses. These seven qualities and nursing skills reflect only a small portion of the bright minds, capable hands, and big hearts they bring to our facilities. Thanks to them, CareOne is able to provide a better care experience for all our patients and foster a positive company culture.

From Student to Star: How CareOne’s CNA Training in NJ Stands out From the Rest https://www.care-one.com/blog/from-student-to-star-how-careones-cna-training-program-stands-out-from-the-rest/ Tue, 25 Jul 2023 17:50:26 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=8209 CNA training program

It’s no secret that becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) requires time and hard work. The average program duration being 120 hours or six weeks. Oftentimes, CNA training courses can feel intense, overly rigid and impersonal, which can lead to students feeling burnout or even withdrawing altogether. Founded and led by Belen de Leon, CareOne’s CNA training in NJ is not only designed to prevent these issues from happening, but to keep students engaged and improve exam outcomes. Our approach has a proven track record, with 100% of CareOne alumni passing the New Jersey CNA certification exams to date.

Since 2001, CareOne has been an approved Nurse Aide in Long Term Care Facilities Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) in the State of New Jersey. In the past five years alone, we have helped more than 186 applicants advance from student graduate to certified CNAs. CareOne’s classrooms foster a caring learning environment that guide and supports students through coursework and exams. With personalized attention dedicated to each student, we understand each their unique learning habits and needs.

Here’s a closer look at CareOne’s CNA training program:

Coursework

Once accepted into the CareOne CNA program, coursework can be completed in 120 hours. The program consists of 90 unpaid class time hours. 50 of the 90 hours are allotted for classroom study while the other 40 hours are allotted for clinical work. With a 1:10 teacher-student ratio, all CareOne students receive personalized instruction from Belen, a highly knowledgeable and considerate teacher. One example of Belen’s exceptional leadership is her work with students who speak English as a second language (ESL).

A Native Spanish speaker, Belen appreciates the unique challenges of her ESL students and helps them retain information through visuals and other modalities. Her teaching has not only helped CareOne maintain its 100% passing rate, but it has earned her a reputation among her students as a maternal figure whom they can call for help 24/7 — whether they need help with a specific course or want sound advice on the nursing profession.

Certification

After completing their classroom and clinical work, students need to pass two government-operated exams to become a registered CNA. First, they must pass a state-certified skills test. Results are typically available 3-5 days after taking the skills test. Upon passing the skills test, students then need to take a written test. This written test typically comprises 70 questions, 10 of which focus on history and government and 60 of which require critical thinking. After passing both the skills and written exams, students receive their CNA certificate.

Continuing Education

Since 2018, more than 186 students have graduated from the CareOne CNA program in New Jersey. Of those 186 alumni, 100% have passed their CNA certifications. After becoming certified, many CNAs choose to join the CareOne team. Others might choose to pursue additional credentials, such as RN, LPN or Physician’s Assistant. To support continued education among our CNAs, CareOne is proud to offer tuition support and partial reimbursement (upon application acceptance and proof of passing).

The CareOne CNA Training Program Philosophy

At CareOne, our CNA education philosophy has three pillars which we believe drive our program’s continued success:
  • Attitude: You can be the best nurse, but without your attitude, you’re not going anywhere. Beyond mandatory coursework, Belen teaches her students the importance of humility and perseverance — and how these attributes will shape them into better CNAs.
  • Attendance: Students must complete 90 hours of courses or they won’t be able to graduate. Belen strives to achieve perfect attendance rates in her classes by welcoming students with warmth and empathy. She inspires her pupils to show up and learn.
  • Aptitude: CareOne believes that students with the right attitude and consistent attendance will cultivate more aptitude throughout their education, training and beyond. With CareOne’s CNA training program attracting students from a multitude of backgrounds, Belen teaches that no matter where you’re from, you are capable.

Aleeyah, a recent CareOne CNA program graduate, knew she wanted to work in healthcare, but wasn’t always sure where. She describes CareOne’s CNA program as “an eye-opening opportunity” for which she thanks Belen. “You won’t get this kind of teaching anywhere else,” she said. Aleeyah is happy to have pursued her CNA certificate and is ambitiously looking ahead to become a PA or an NP. “The possibilities are endless.”

CareOne’s CNA training in NJ extends beyond teaching coursework; it instills values that serve as the foundation of caregivers. At CareOne, CNAs view their work as more than a paycheck. To them, it’s a vocation. Our CNAs are committed to delivering hospital-level care in a place that feels like home.

The CareOne Way: Creating a Healthy Workplace Environment for Nurses https://www.care-one.com/blog/the-careone-way-creating-a-healthy-workplace-environment-for-nurses/ Mon, 08 May 2023 20:12:06 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=7254 Creating a healthy workplace environment for nurses

The nursing profession can be demanding and fast-paced, but for most clinicians, the work is extremely rewarding. There are many reasons why people are driven to become nurses, but most agree that their raison-d’être is “the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life.” At CareOne, we understand that purpose is what brings our clinicians to work every day, and we strive to create a healthy workplace environment for our nurses where those relationships can flourish.

The CareOne Difference

The difference we make is not just our standard to deliver excellence in medical care (though that is integral to what we do) — it is our commitment to providing care with the utmost respect, warmth, and compassion. This commitment extends beyond how we care for our residents; it is also evident in the long-lasting relationships our clinicians and employees cultivate with our residents and patients. More importantly, our people – the committed clinicians, administrators, and staff across more than 50 locations – drive our mission forward and personify what we call the CareOne Difference.

Caregivers with Heart

Our workforce is diverse and multicultural, and despite being from all walks of life, they have a shared goal of providing our residents and patients with the highest quality of care. This is what sets us apart – the commitment our clinicians and staff have to our patients is our guiding principle. “This work I do – it’s a calling,” says Gitana Garbich, Assistant Director of Recreation at CareOne at Wayne. “I have been at CareOne for four years, working mainly in the memory care unit. These residents have so much love to give and so many stories to tell. It’s so easy to be a good person with them.”

The relationships formed at our facilities – particularly between our nurses and residents – play a profound role in how rewarding this work can be. It’s the primary reason why CareOne’s turnover rate is among the lowest in the country. Our employees stick around – some for over 50 years – because of the bonds they form with patients and the sense of purpose their work brings them. “My team has been together a long time and we are very collaborative. It’s really incredible to work for an organization that will give me and my team the support we need to provide the best care,” says Terri Ruffo, RN, BSN, and current building administrator for CareOne at Holmdel.

In turn, CareOne is committed to creating an environment for clinicians where they feel supported in every facet of their work. In addition to on-the-job training and various opportunities for career advancement, CareOne supports nurses who want to experience working in different specialties and with different patient groups in other CareOne facilities.

The Impact of a Caring Culture

For our nurses, the feeling is mutual. Mary Beth Rose, RN and dementia care specialist at two of CareOne’s assisted living facilities in Livingston and Parsippany, said, “When you work with dementia patients, it takes a village. Working with the families is an integral part of that – we cannot be successful without family support.” In long-term care, nurses, residents and their families form long-lasting bonds: “The residents become part of my family and I become part of theirs.”

By prioritizing a compassionate culture, CareOne’s nurses have the physical and emotional capacity to provide the highest level of care to their patients and create a ripple effect of positive change. In our skilled nursing and rehab facilities, we have the pleasure of seeing patients regain their mobility, reunite with their spouses and children and ultimately go home healthy and able to continue celebrating life’s most precious milestones and memories. This is all in thanks to our devoted nurses, who, parallel to our patients’ recovery and progress, are our greatest accomplishments.

The Straus family founded CareOne with the mission to reinvent how we care for our aging population, which is fundamental to the health of our society. We help people age with dignity in a variety of settings – from independent and assisted living to sub-acute and long-term acute care – with the help of state-of-the-art technology and high-quality medical treatment.

Director of Nursing at Harmony Village at CareOne at Paramus, Blanca Valle said, “I love seeing how the residents’ faces light up when we do activities or to see the women get excited when I wear heels for the day. It’s the little things that make residents happy that make me happy as well.”

CareOne’s Positive Work Environment Fuels Long Tenure https://www.care-one.com/blog/careones-positive-work-environment-fuels-long-tenure/ Fri, 24 Mar 2023 19:27:34 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=7237 Nurses stack hands in a positive work environment

At CareOne, we pride ourselves in delivering the most exceptional standard of care to our patients and residents and fostering a work environment that’s positive and nurturing. And at the heart of that care is our employees. “Our staff work tirelessly to treat your family like their own and provide the highest level of support possible,” said Emily Vasquez, VP of Special Operations. “They are core to the work we do, and we are proud to offer them a second home where they can build their careers.”

We recently sat down with four incredible employees from our Cresskill location. Each of these women has reached a milestone of working 35 (or more!) years at CareOne. We are so grateful to them for their service, and wanted to share their journey with you as we celebrate and thank them for all that they do.

Ilyse, our RN/unit manager, will celebrate 35 years with us this July. Marcia has been a laundry aide with CareOne for 38 years. Barbara, a CNA, will celebrate 40 years with us this September, and Margery, another CNA, will celebrate 51 years with us this August!

Q: Tell us about your career journey at CareOne. How did you hear about us?

ILYSE – I live about 10 minutes away from Cresskill, so I was aware of the facility and the community. I had left Columbia Presbyterian about a year before joining CareOne and was looking for more of a community job at the time. I went in for an interview with CareOne and never left! I started as a staff nurse on night shifts and eventually became a night shift supervisor. After 17 years on night shift, I switched to days, and within a week, became the unit manager!

MARCIA – I started as a laundry aide in March of 1985. I saw an ad in the paper and a friend of mine was a supervisor at CareOne at the time. She was the one who recommended me and I’ve been here ever since! I love working with the company. I have great coworkers and management has always been beautiful to me. I love my job.

BARBARA – I am originally from Jamaica and came to this country in 1981. I was working somewhere else at the time, but a friend of my mother was working here and referred me to CareOne. They gave me the job as a CNA, and I’ve been here ever since September 1983! My journey has been wonderful because I love my job, and I really enjoy taking care of people.

MARGERY – I came to the US from Jamaica, initially to go to school in Chicago, but at that time, I didn’t have enough money. I was visiting a friend in Englewood, NJ, and drove by the Dunroven Health Care Center, which later became CareOne at Cresskill. I walked right in and asked if I could have a job. The administrator gave me an application and I called them the next day. I started working in 1972, and once CareOne took over, I never left!

Q: What do you love about CareOne?

ILYSE – I love the staff! And patient care – it has changed a lot over the years, becoming more sub-acute, meaning working with more complicated medical conditions, which is an exciting challenge to me.

MARCIA – Everything! No complaints at all, none whatsoever.

BARBARA – CareOne is like a family, and there’s great teamwork. We’re not strangers or coworkers; it’s a family setting and I like that. They are always so great; I could never go somewhere else.

MARGERY – I’ve always said that if you don’t like what you’re doing, you shouldn’t work there. I love my job; I enjoy every minute of it. I have a lot of fun! Even when I reach 100, if I am healthy, I’ll still be working. I enjoy helping people who can’t do it themselves. I feel like if I can help you, trust me, I will. Even if they’re not my patient, I will go out of my way to help.

Q: Tell me about the people you work with.

ILYSE – I love the staff I work with, I always have. There have been many people that have come and gone, but there are always great people to work with.

MARCIA – They are very nice, polite people. We are team players, and we have to work together!

BARBARA – It’s all about teamwork. We make it a team effort and work together. Chatting and laughing together makes for a great time.

MARGERY – The people I work with are very, very good people. We get along well; I try to get along with everyone and help everyone. We go to Broadway shows and dinners, we have wonderful times. We need one another to work together. I still even talk to people who I used to work with that moved away.

Q: Why have you stayed with CareOne for so long?

ILYSE – I love working with people and the challenges of the nursing profession, as well as the learning and education involved.

MARCIA – I just love everybody! It’s just a love fest! When I have a few minutes, I’ll sit and have conversations with the residents. I treat them like they’re my parents or grandparents – with respect. When I get older, I might be in the same boat and will need people to take care of me. You have to give them respect and dignity.

BARBARA – I really like the work. It makes me feel really independent. It makes me feel good to take care of someone and help them feel better to go home. I know I’ll have to retire at some point but I’m going to miss it, too.

MARGERY – I enjoy working, especially with older people. I treat everyone in that building as if they’re my parents or grandparents (or my brother and sister). I give them whatever they want and never say no. The residents will even ask, “Is Margery here today?” It feels good to be needed and good to be appreciated. It keeps me going.

Q: What does your day-to-day job look like?

ILYSE – Right now, my title is unit manager, but it touches the entire building. I am responsible for the clinical conditions of all the patients, interacting with all the staff, and approaching everything as a team.

MARCIA – I am here from 6:00 a.m. to about 2:00 p.m. As soon as I punch in, I get started with the linens; separating linens, going upstairs to bring clothes down, folding up the linen carts, and I just keep going! I take a break at 9:00 a.m., have lunch at noon, and at 2:00 p.m., I clock out to go home.

BARBARA – When I start in the morning, I feed the patients, bathe them and make them comfortable. I get them ready for therapy or dialysis and ensure they are comfortable and happy as best as I can. For those who are terminal, we take care of them for as long as we can and be there for them.

MARGERY – I have a certain number of patients I take care of – sometimes 8, sometimes 10. I take care of them and get them whatever they need. When I put them to bed, I walk down the hall every five minutes to make sure no one gets out of bed and falls. I make sure no one falls on my watch!

Q: Is there a specific patient or relationship you’ve had that stuck with you and meant a lot to you that you can share?

BARBARA – Years ago, we had this patient, Agnes, who was such a nice lady. She didn’t like to go to bed early so we kept her in the day room with us and she would help us fold towels. She loved to dance so we would dance and exercise all together. We gave her what we could to make her feel at home. At one point, she was supposed to go but she didn’t want to go. I will always remember her.

ILYSE – There are many. Right now, we’ve been taking care of patients with a LVAD (Left Ventricular Assistive Device), which is a very specialized form of care for complex or end-stage cardiac patients. I have a long-term LVAD patient here and taking care of them has been very meaningful.

MARGERY – It’s hard to say specifically because I love to help them all. Some take my number when they leave to call me. Once, I had a patient who never wanted to get out of bed. I told him, “You need to get out of bed and let the blood flow through your body so you get well and go home!” He called me his sergeant. On the day he left, he told the front desk that he needed to say goodbye to his sergeant. I met his wife and she told me that every morning, he would sit up in bed and say, “I wonder when my sergeant will come in today” and thanked me for encouraging him to get up, get well and go home. I told him I would miss him.

MARCIA – That’s hard to say, I have had great relationships across the board with residents and colleagues!

Q: Are you proud of what you do?

ILYSE – Absolutely! I feel that it makes a big difference.

MARCIA – Yes, I am!

BARBARA – I am. I like that when I leave here each day, I feel that I did a good job. I’m not perfect, but I do my best. CareOne first sent me to get my CNA license, and when I passed the test and got my certificate, I was very, very happy.

MARGERY – Oh yes, I am proud of what I do! I love what I do, it’s mine. I enjoy every moment of it. Sometimes it’s hard, but I take a deep breath and do what I have to do to get it done. Always be kind and say, “Can I help you?”

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment from your time at CareOne?

ILYSE – I’m proud of how we came out the other side from the challenges of COVID. Having stuck with it during the worst of times, it is satisfying that things are finally getting better.

MARCIA – When they surprised me with “employee of the month” about 15-20 years ago. I wasn’t expecting that, and they surprised me in the dining room. When they called my name out, I started crying! They had a plaque for me. About 3-4 years ago, I got another recognition for being in service for so many years.

BARBARA – I’ve learnt so much about aging working at CareOne. It gave me strength when my parents passed away. I am more able to accept it and was very proud of myself for that. CareOne helped me grow and become an independent person by meeting different people of different cultures. Between patients and coworkers, there are many! Through my work, I was able to buy a house and I feel really good about myself. I love it here, I really do.

MARGERY – I bought my home from it! You see this job? Everything I own comes from it.

Thank you, Ilyse, Marcia, Barbara, and Margery, for your service and your commitment to our patients and residents. We appreciate all that you do!

Nurses stack hands in a positive work environment

At CareOne, we pride ourselves in delivering the most exceptional standard of care to our patients and residents and fostering a work environment that’s positive and nurturing. And at the heart of that care is our employees. “Our staff work tirelessly to treat your family like their own and provide the highest level of support possible,” said Emily Vasquez, VP of Special Operations. “They are core to the work we do, and we are proud to offer them a second home where they can build their careers.” We recently sat down with four incredible employees from our Cresskill location.

CareOne Celebrates Nursing Home Week https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-celebrates-nursing-home-week/ Fri, 13 May 2022 18:35:16 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=7223 CareOne team members

CareOne is celebrating National Nurses Week from May 6th-12th. This week is an important observance for us; because our nurses perform many roles in our wide spectrum of services, all of which are critical to our patients’ quality of life. Today we want to applaud our nurses by recognizing everything they do within all of our care modalities.

CareOne Staff and Residents Join In the Fun
Now more than ever, we at CareOne have reason to celebrate. We’re thankful for our staff’s efforts and for having a great resident community in the best possible health. And our residents especially were ready to rejoice with the staff they know so well and appreciate so much.

Some of our staff members weighed in on why Nursing Home Week is special to them and the people they care for. Many of them said it’s important to simply take time to relax and appreciate the people around them. And although our residents are always grateful for all the services our staff provides, during Nursing Home Week they are able to show their appreciation all together in a grand, organized way.

The Nursing Home Week parties at CareOne’s locations are a much-anticipated way for residents and staff to get together and share a good time. Some locations have unique special events – one of our facilities had the management team dropped in carnival-style dunk tanks and pelted with cream pies by residents, to the laughter of all.

Prioritizing Our Residents Year-Round
Above all, Nursing Home Week commemorates the things our staff do every other week of the year. Our residents and their medical, physical, social, and spiritual needs come first at all of CareOne’s facilities.

We’re always searching for the best talent and the most compassionate people who will be able to give CareOne residents the highest quality of care. If you want to apply to join our team and become part of an organization devoted to empathy and excellence, you can search our job postings or contact us about CareOne careers.

CareOne Celebrates Our Nurses: Why They’re Vital to All Our Services https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-celebrates-our-nurses-why-theyre-vital-to-all-our-services/ Mon, 09 May 2022 18:40:00 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=7227 Close up of stethoscope in shape of heart

CareOne is celebrating National Nurses Week from May 6-12, 2022. This week is an important observance for us; because our nurses perform many roles in our wide spectrum of services, all of which are critical to our patients’ quality of life. Today we want to applaud our nurses by recognizing everything they do within all of our care modalities.

Nurses in Assisted Living

CareOne’s assisted living facilities are able to provide whole-person care and offer a high level of quality of life thanks to the efforts of our nursing staff. One of the biggest reasons CareOne assisted living meets such a high standard is because we have nursing staff on call 24/7. They are the first in line to fulfill our clients’ needs, from pressing medical concerns to general care and comfort. Nurses also help lead our on-site health centers, and make sure residents don’t need to leave home in order to have medical issues attended to.

Nurses in Post-Acute Care and Rehabilitation

Nursing care is also essential to getting people capable of going home after they’re discharged from the hospital or undergo surgery. Our post-acute care relies on registered nurses and advanced practice nurses not only to support the medical specializations that get patients back on their feet, like physical therapy and nutrition, but also to advocate for and advise people during their rehabilitation journey. That journey continues even after patients are no longer under our care, so our nurses work to instruct them so their rehabilitation skills last a lifetime.

Nurses in Memory Care

Memory care nursing is a highly necessary support for people who have dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or other cognitive issues. With the help of our nurses, residents at CareOne’s Harmony Village memory care facilities are able to lead rich and fulfilling lives while mitigating their symptoms as best as possible. We make sure our nurses are able to continue their education while working for us, including by receiving certifications in dementia care.

Nurses in Long-Term Care

In CareOne’s long-term care facilities, residents have access to help from registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and certified nursing assistants. The nursing staff at these locations get to know their patients deeply, and care for them with the utmost empathy. Nurses are typically the medical staff our long-term care residents see the most often, and are important to their day-to-day support throughout their stay.

Why We Want to Thank All of Our Nurses

No matter which department they work in, CareOne’s nurses are absolutely essential. Their highly skilled and highly compassionate care is something that all of our clients take notice of and deeply appreciate. Nurses, in short, keep CareOne caring for all those we are responsible for, and we are eternally grateful to them for it.

We continue to search for the best talent in every field, and we are currently hiring for nursing positions at many of our locations. On this National Nurses Week, we are proud to say we offer all nurses a chance to advance their careers with us, a slate of amazing benefits and opportunities, and so much more – but even that is small thanks in comparison to what our nurses do for us.

CareOne: Making a difference in the careers of those who make a difference in the lives of others https://www.care-one.com/blog/careone-making-a-difference-in-the-careers-of-those-who-make-a-difference-in-the-lives-of-others/ Fri, 12 Nov 2021 19:29:25 +0000 https://careone.stage.eks.matchfire.io/?p=7218 Female caregiver supporting older woman

The last two years have shown just how important the caring professions are, and just how important it is for people in the caring professions to take care of themselves, attending to their own well-being while pursuing career growth.

Long before the COVID-19 pandemic made those facts evident to all, they served as guiding principles for CareOne, the largest privately owned assisted living and health care provider in New Jersey. Since its establishment almost 50 years ago, CareOne has grown by providing career opportunities, a high-quality work environment, and work-life balance to its 11,000+ team members who provide high-quality care and life-enriching services to the residents of CareOne’s 34 communities across the Garden State and at communities in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Two of those team members recently shared their stories to encourage others to explore current employment opportunities and join them on the CareOne team.

How CareOne Speaks This Speech Pathologist’s Language

Speech pathologist Liana Romano, MS, joined CareOne in 2014, working with residents of the organization’s communities in Paramus and Ridgewood. Opportunities for advancement came quickly. “I developed into a lead therapist and helped mentor graduate students and clinical fellows in speech pathology,” Romano said of her career progression. “CareOne was developing leadership roles for people working with residents affected by dementia, so I started that educational process in 2018, and eventually transitioned into my current role as a dementia care specialist at CareOne Paramus.”

When asked what she likes about working at CareOne, Romano listed several attractive features, including:

  • flexibility to explore different roles
  • training and support needed to excel in a new role
  • team approach to care
  • commitment to residents and their families
  • recognition that team members have personal lives as well as professional lives
  • opportunity to advance within a large and growing organization

“While my current role as a dementia care specialist wasn’t on my radar when CareOne approached me about it, they gave me a mentor who I was able to observe working in a memory care community in East Brunswick and who later came to my community to help me get organized and set goals,” Romano said. “CareOne supports the Positive Care Approach, and the administrators are excellent — they are very approachable and give clear direction.”

Romano added, “Everyone works together here, and they have your back. We’re hard workers and always have our residents in mind, no matter what we do,” she said. “It’s a dynamic and inclusive environment where everyone’s opinion matters. It’s also a very family-oriented environment, and the residents and families are wonderful and very appreciative. While it can be challenging to ‘discover’ our residents beneath their memory impairments, we’re very interested in getting to know them as people so that we can honor and cater to their individuality. It’s so rewarding when their whole personality comes out and you get to see that spark.”

When asked to cite the key traits needed for career advancement within CareOne, Romano said, “You have to be ambitious, kind and willing to be a leader in any role. But if you’re driven and committed to the work you’re doing, the sky’s the limit at CareOne.”

From Hospital-based Acute Care Nursing to Dementia Care

Mary Beth Rose, RN, had devoted her entire career to providing acute care to hospital patients before being appointed assistant director of nursing at the CareOne community in Paramus in 2017.

“I’ve been practicing nursing for 40 years, and it was quite a transition to go from acute care nursing to assisted living, but the memory care community at CareOne in Paramus fell under my jurisdiction, and I love working with dementia residents. Even though our residents may be living with dementia and can’t tell you details about themselves, I truly enjoy working with this population because I feel vs. know that everybody deserves to be loved and treated with dignity. Everyone’s life should have a purpose,” said Rose, who currently is a dementia care specialist at the CareOne communities in Livingston and Parsippany.

“When CareOne recognizes someone’s interest in and talent for a position, they’ll give you the support you need — whether it’s training, a mentor, or just the opportunity to advance into something different and change your entire career, even after 40 years,” Rose said of the new direction CareOne helped her take as a dementia care specialist.

The veteran nurse explained, “I truly feel like I’m a new graduate who has found her passion because CareOne recognized my interests and abilities and invested in having me participate in their Dementia Care Specialist program. CareOne continues to send me for the training and education I need to support our residents, families and staff.

“As a dementia care specialist, my role is to assess the level of cognition of someone living with dementia and develop a plan of care that’s unique to them and focused on keeping them as independent as possible,” she noted. “I love working closely with our residents’ families, helping to create a warm, inviting and loving home for each resident, and ensuring that their life is meaningful at any stage of dementia.”

Rose added that CareOne recognizes and supports its employees’ work-life balance. “They know that their employees need to take care of themselves and their families in order to take care of others, and they give you the tools you need to do your job. They’re truly focused on my safety and well-being.”

She concluded, “I love the community and team of colleagues and residents I work with. It’s a privilege to care for our residents and to work for CareOne, and I never want to leave.”

CareOne has several employment opportunities for people interested in a variety of positions.
“CareOne was developing leadership roles for people working with residents affected by dementia, so I started that educational process in 2018, and eventually transitioned into my current role as a dementia care specialist at CareOne Paramus.” When asked what she likes about working at CareOne, Romano listed several attractive features, including:
  • flexibility to explore different roles
  • training and support needed to excel in a new role
  • team approach to care
  • commitment to residents and their families
  • recognition that team members have personal lives as well as professional lives
  • opportunity to advance within a large and growing organization
“While my current role as a dementia care specialist wasn’t on my radar when CareOne approached me about it, they gave me a mentor who I was able to observe working in a memory care community in East Brunswick and who later came to my community to help me get organized and set goals,” Romano said. “CareOne supports the Positive Care Approach, and the administrators are excellent — they are very approachable and give clear direction.” Romano added, “Everyone works together here, and they have your back. It’s so rewarding when their whole personality comes out and you get to see that spark.” When asked to cite the key traits needed for career advancement within CareOne, Romano said, “You have to be ambitious, kind and willing to be a leader in any role.
